The problem

A generic manufacturing ERP doesn't know what AS9100 or ITAR mean.

Most aerospace suppliers start on a general manufacturing ERP, then hit the ceiling fast: AS9100 doesn't just want a nonconformance log, it wants a corrective action process with containment, root-cause analysis, and verification of effectiveness — and every part needs to be serial-traced to the exact revision and configuration it was actually built to, not just the drawing it was supposed to match.

Working defense contracts adds a second layer a generic ERP never touches: ITAR/EAR export control (who can even see the technical data), and if you bill the government directly or as a sub, DCAA-compliant cost accounting — timekeeping to the task, indirect cost pool allocation, and allowability rules a standard job-costing module doesn't enforce.

Bolting a quality plugin onto NetSuite or Epicor gets you a form that looks like AS9102 First Article Inspection paperwork. It doesn't get you the configuration genealogy an auditor needs to trace a nonconforming part back to its exact build, or the access controls that keep an ITAR-controlled drawing from showing up in a search a non-US-person employee can run.
